STREET

L'Uomo Vogue

This image comes from an editorial in L'Uomo Vogue magazine.

The Vogue story was an early attempt to explore streetwear as high fashion, and while the look may not strike you as streetwear now, it was groundbreaking for Vogue to present it that way.

I was just a punk skater kid—but at that time, and especially in the luxury fashion world, this creativity was still on the fringe. Looking back, this image might be the first streetwear-inspired editorial in a major fashion magazine. It wouldn’t be long before designers like Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy began incorporating streetwear into their aesthetics, reshaping the industry forever.

VICTIM OF THE CRIME

Dior Homme by Hedi Slimane

In addition to being part of the first teams to bring streetwear to popular culture, I was also fortunate to play a part in pushing against the societal constructs of gender. Hedi Slimane was the lead designer at Dior Homme and included skirts for men in his "Victim of the Crime" collection. Because my look was equal parts androgynous and masculine, I served as a good fit to explore this very early wave of culture that challenged how men can represent themselves.
